Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: palaeo- comb. form, onto- comb. form, -logy comb. form.
Etymology: < palaeo- comb. form + onto- comb. form + -logy comb. form, probably after French paléontologie (1830 as palaeontologie ) or German Paläontologie (1834 or earlier). Compare earlier (in different sense) ontology n. Compare fossilogy n.
The branch of science that deals with extinct and fossil humans, animals, and plants, or more generally with evidence of organic life during the geological past; (occasionally) spec. palaeozoology. Also: the fossil evidence relating to a particular geological formation, group of organisms, etc.
