Origin: Probably a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin panacēs; Latin panacēa.
Etymology: Probably partly < classical Latin panacēs, any of various plants reputed to have universal healing powers ( < ancient Greek πάνακες , use as noun of neuter singular of Hellenistic Greek πανακής all-healing < παν- pan- comb. form + ἄκος cure, remedy: see acology n.), and partly < classical Latin panacēa panacea n. Compare ( < classical Latin panacēa ) Middle French, French panacée kind of plant (1549; 1213 in Old French in an isolated attestation), plant with healing properties (1559), universal remedy (1564). Compare earlier panax n. and later panacea n.The form panace, if pronounced as a disyllable, could also represent classical Latin panac-, stem of panax. Several quots. translate Virgil Aeneid 12. 416ff.: Venus..spargit..salubris ambrosiae sucos et odoriferam panaceam.
Now archaic and historical.
Originally: (an extract of) opopanax or a similar medicinal herb. Later: a mythical plant reputed to heal all diseases. Cf. allheal n., panacea n. 2.The Latin name panaces was used for various plants with medicinal properties, including opopanax, yarrow, and lovage.
