单词 panagia
释义

Panagian.

Brit. /ˌpanʌɪˈjiːə/, /ˌpanʌɪˈjɑː/, /paˈnʌɪə/, U.S. /ˌpɑnəˈjiə/
Forms: 1700s– Panagia, 1800s– Panhagia, 1900s– Panaghia.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek παναγία.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek παναγία (used from Origen onwards of the Virgin Mary), feminine of πανάγιος all-holy < ancient Greek παν- pan- comb. form + ἅγιος holy (see hagio- comb. form). Compare French Panagia (1842; 1828 as †Panagie; earlier in sense ‘ceremony of Orthodox monks’ (1752)).The form Panhagia perhaps attempts to represent the initial aspiration of ἅγιος.
Orthodox Church.
The All-holy (as a title of the Virgin Mary). Also: an image or representation of the Virgin Mary.
