Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish palapa.
Etymology: < Mexican Spanish palapa (c1975 in sense ‘shelter roofed with palm leaves or branches’; 1929 or earlier in sense ‘leaves or branches of the tree Orbignya cohune’), of unknown origin.
Chiefly U.S.
A traditional Mexican rustic shelter, roofed with palm leaves or branches; (also) the palm leaves or branches used in such a construction. Hence: any structure built in imitation of this, esp. on a beach.Frequently attributive.
