单词 papirosa
释义

papirosan.

Brit. /ˌpapᵻˈrɒsə/, /ˌpapᵻˈrəʊsə/, U.S. /ˌpɑpəˈroʊsə/, /ˌpɑpəˈrɑsə/
Inflections: Plural papirosi, papyrosi, papyrossi, papyrossos, papyrosy.
Forms: 1800s papiros, 1800s papyros, 1900s– papirosa, 1900s– papyrosa, 1900s– papyross.
Origin: A borrowing from Russian. Etymons: Russian papiros, papirosa.
Etymology: < Russian papiros (1847 or earlier), papirosa (1861; in 20th cent. distinguished from sigareta Western-style cigarette), probably < Polish papieros cigarette of any type (although this is only attested later) < papier paper (16th cent.; ultimately < classical Latin papȳrus : see paper n.) + a second element of uncertain origin. It has been suggested that the second element might be after Spanish. Compare Polish pachitos kind of cigarette with a straw mouthpiece (first half of the 19th cent.; Russian paxitos , paxitosa attested in Turgenev) < Spanish pajitos , plural of pajito < paja straw + -ito , diminutive suffix (see -et suffix1); the Spanish term for this type of cigarette was actually pajillo (compare papelito n. for a similar confusion of Spanish suffixes). It is possible that Polish papier was substituted for pachit- to distinguish the paper cigarette from the straw type. V. Dal′ Tolkovyj slovar′ živago velikorusskago jazyka (1881) at sigara lists Russian sigaret(k)a as a ‘particular type of small cigar’ and states that cigars can be further subdivided into paxitosy and papirosy. The plural forms in -i and -y are after the Russian plural form papirosy.
A type of Russian unfiltered cigarette consisting of a tube of paper or cardboard, a short section at one end of which is filled with tobacco.
