Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palatoglossus.
Etymology: < scientific Latin palatoglossus < palato- palato- comb. form + ancient Greek γλῶσσα tongue (see gloss n.1). Compare earlier myloglossus n. and palatopharyngeus n.
Anatomy.
A muscle that arises from the palate and inserts into the side of the tongue, forming the anterior arch of the fauces and serving to raise the back of the tongue and constrict the fauces.
