Origin: A borrowing from Tamil. Etymon: Tamil pālai.
Etymology: < Tamil pālai plant with milky sap (see pala n.1).The botanical application of the Tamil word to this particular plant appears to have been arbitrary.
The African rubber vine Cryptostegia grandiflora (family Asclepiadaceae), a woody twining plant containing a milky latex, widely cultivated in the tropics and a serious weed in northern Australia. More fully palay rubber and palay rubber vine.
