Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin panaricium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin panaricium (4th cent.), variant reading (compare -itious suffix1) for classical Latin paronychium inflammation around a fingernail, a whitlow (see paronychia n.). In form panaris probably after Middle French, French panaris (1575; c1370 as panarice; also 1580 as pannarice). Compare also Catalan †panaríç (now panadís), Italian †panarico, †panarizo (1491), †panereccio (1536), patereccio (1483), Spanish panarizo (a1335; now regional), panadizo (1545).
Medicine. Now rare.
Infection or inflammation of the tissues near a fingernail; an instance of this, a whitlow; = paronychia n. 1.
