Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; probably modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: pan- comb. form, chromatic adj.
Etymology: < pan- comb. form + chromatic adj., probably after French panchromatique (E. Gautier 1899, in L'année scientifique et industrielle 42 78). Compare earlier orthochromatic adj. Compare French panchromatique (1903), German panchromatisch (1904 or earlier).

1. Of photographic emulsion, film, etc.: sensitive (though not equally so) to light of all colours in the visible range; (of an image) made using such film. Also more widely: utilizing or relating to the whole of the visible spectrum.
