Etymology: Apparently < para- prefix¹ + -gnath comb. form + -a suffix², after either German Paragnathen or French paragnathes (for both, see paragnath n.).Attested only as a plural. Singular forms paragnathon, paragnathus, and paragnathum are recorded in Funk's Standard Dict. (1895) and Cent. Dict. Suppl. (1909).

Zoology. rare.
