Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin Paragonimus , -iasis suffix.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Paragonimus, genus name (M. Braun 1899, in Zool. Anzeiger 22 492; < para- para- prefix1 + ancient Greek γόνιμος productive, fertile < the stem of γόνος offspring (see gono- comb. form) + -ιμος, suffix forming adjectives) + -iasis suffix, after German Paragonimiasis (A. Looss in C. A. Mense Handb. der Tropenkrankheiten (1905) I. 81).
Medicine.
Infection of humans or other mammals with lung flukes (trematodes of the genus Paragonimus), which results from the ingestion of metacercariae in uncooked crustaceans and causes chiefly pulmonary disease with chronic cough and haemoptysis.
