单词 pandal
释义

pandaln.

Brit. /ˈpandl/, /ˈpʌndl/, U.S. /ˈpɑndl/
Forms: 1600s pandall, 1700s bandel, 1800s pandaul, 1800s pandhal, 1800s pendall, 1800s pendaul, 1800s pundull, 1800s– pandal, 1800s– pendal.
Origin: A borrowing from Tamil. Etymon: Tamil pantal.
Etymology: < Tamil pantal. O.E.D. Suppl. (1982) states that this word is now usually with pronunciation (pændā·l) /panˈdɑːl/. However, there is no evidence that this is the case; in fact, this pronunciation would be limited to obsolete variants in -daul.
In South Asia (originally in southern areas): a shed, booth, shelter, or triumphal arch, esp. for temporary use (at a festival, etc.); a marquee; spec. (among Hindus and Parsees) a tent or booth for a marriage, in which the bridal couple are initially separated by a curtain.
