Etymology: < scientific Latin Pandion, genus name (M. J. C. L. de Savigny Descr. Egypte (1809) I. 95, osprey; < classical Latin Pandīōn (ancient Greek Πανδίων), the name of the father of Procne and Philomela in classical mythology) + -ine suffix¹.The name was apparently chosen by de Savigny because Pandion's daughters and his son-in-law Tereus were transformed into the birds that their names designate in Greek (see Philomel n.). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pændəi·onəin) /pænˈdaɪəʊnaɪn/.

Ornithology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

Of or relating to the genus Pandion, subfamily Pandioninae, or family Pandionidae, comprising the osprey.
