Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French panégyrique.
Etymology: < French panégyrique public speech in praise of a person in classical antiquity (1512), praise of a person (first quarter of 17th cent.), exaggerated praise (1842), (adjective) of the nature of a panegyric (1557) < classical Latin panēgyricus public eulogy, in post-classical Latin also (adjective) laudatory (4th cent.) < ancient Greek πανηγυρικός of or for a public assembly or festival, in Hellenistic Greek also of or relating to a eulogy, flattering < πανήγυρις panegyris n. + -ικός -ic suffix.
