Etymology: < (i) classical Latin panēgyris festival (on a 2nd-cent. inscription), in post-classical Latin also general assembly (a1536 in Erasmus; recorded in Cicero in this sense as a Greek word), laudatory speech (9th cent.), and its etymon (ii) ancient Greek πανήγυρις general or national assembly, especially a festival in honour of a god, in Hellenistic Greek also a festal oration, laudatory speech < παν- pan- comb. form + ἄγυρις , Aeolic form corresponding to Attic-Ionic ἀγορά assembly (see agora n.1). Compare earlier panegyric n.
