Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: panegyrize v., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < panegyr- (in panegyrize v.) + -ism suffix. Compare Hellenistic Greek πανηγυρισμός , Byzantine Greek πανηγύρισμα celebration of a public festival, post-classical Latin panegyrismus (a1540). Compare earlier panegyrist n. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·nidʒĭriz'm) /ˈpæniːdʒɪrɪz(ə)m/.
