单词 paleways
释义

palewaysadj.adv.

Brit. /ˈpeɪlweɪz/, U.S. /ˈpeɪlˌweɪz/
Forms: see pale n.1 and -ways comb. form.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: pale n.1, -ways comb. form.
Etymology: < pale n.1 + -ways comb. form. With use as adjective compare earlier paled adj.2, paly adj.1 With use as adverb compare earlier palewise adv. and slightly later pale-way adv.
Heraldry.
A. adj.
= paly adj.1 1. Now rare.Quot. 1782 (also alluded to in quot. 1856) represents the original description of the shield forming part of the Great Seal of the United States of America. In heraldic terms, this is strictly not ‘paly’ (which refers only to even numbers of stripes) and should be blazoned ‘argent six pallets gules’, but this would obscure the symbolic reference to the thirteen original States of the Union.
