Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin palingenesia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin palingenesia regeneration, rebirth (10th cent.; 8th cent. in glossaries (see below); cited as a Greek word in classical Latin authors, and in Latin transcription in some manuscripts of post-classical Latin authors (5th cent.)) < Hellenistic Greek παλιγγενεσία < ancient Greek πάλιν again (see palinodia n.) + γένεσις birth, generation, origin (see genesis n.).In form palingenesian after Hellenistic Greek παλιγγενεσίαν, accusative of παλιγγενεσία , cited in the French text translated in quot. 1587.
