Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian paolo.
Etymology: < Italian paolo (a1584 as pavolo) < Paolo, the name of St Paul and of Pope Paul III.The coin was first struck under Pope Paul III, but also bears an image of St Paul. N.E.D. (1904) also gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pā·olo /ˈpaolo/.
Now historical.
Originally: a papal silver coin, first struck during the pontificate of Paul III (1543–9), roughly equivalent in value to the giulio and circulating throughout the papal territories. Later also: a similar coin circulating locally in another Italian state, esp. one produced in Tuscany from the 16th to the 19th centuries.
