Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin papa; Greek παπᾶς.
Etymology: < (i) post-classical Latin papa priest (5th cent.; compare pope n.1 for other senses), and its etymon (ii) Byzantine Greek παπᾶς priest in the Eastern Orthodox Church (6th cent.), in Hellenistic Greek (as πάπας ) in sense ‘bishop’ (3rd cent.) < ancient Greek πάππας , later πάπας , a child's word for ‘father’ (see papa n.2). Compare Old French, Middle French, French papas (c1209 as palpas). Compare also classical Latin pāpas tutor (Juvenal).
Christian Church.
In the Eastern Orthodox Church: a priest, esp. a parish priest.In quot. 1897 with reference to Cyprian, Bishop of Carthage.
