Etymology: < post-classical Latin paraenesis exhortation, advice (4th cent.) < ancient Greek παραίνεσις < παραινεῖν to exhort, advise ( < παρα- para- prefix¹ + αἰνεῖν to speak of, praise, commend < αἶνος tale, story, fable: see enigma n.) + -σις -sis suffix. Compare Middle French, French parénèse (1587).Isolated use of a form paraenese, probably showing French influence, is found in Older Scots in J. Colville Parænese (1602).
