Etymology: Origin uncertain. Sc. National Dict. s.v. palie adj.1, n. suggests derivation ultimately < a variant of pale adj. or pall v.1 Compare peelie adj.Compare also Scots regional (Caithness) paalie-maalie , in the same sense, showing reduplication, and Scots regional (Roxburghshire) palley-walley , showing the influence of peely-wally adj.
