Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French palemente.
Etymology: < Middle French, French †palemente (1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1585; attested earlier as palamente (1543 or earlier)) < pale (see palette n.) + -ment -ment suffix. Compare Italian palamento (1535 in this sense; 1598 in Florio glossed ‘a decke or hatches of a ship’), Spanish palament (1611 as palamenta in sense ‘the oars of a galley collectively, oarage’).
Nautical. Obsolete. rare.
Probably: the oars of a galley considered collectively.
