单词 panicle
释义

paniclen.1

Brit. /ˈpanᵻkl/, U.S. /ˈpænək(ə)l/
Forms: 1500s–1800s pannicle, 1600s– panicle.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pānicula, pānucula.
Etymology: < classical Latin pānicula (also pānucula) the spiked or feathery head of certain reeds and grasses < pānus ear of millet (see note) + -cula -cule suffix. Compare French panicule (1545), Italian pannocchia (c1350), Spanish panoja (1446; compare penuche n.; also 1797 as panícula). It is doubtful whether classical Latin pānus ‘ear of millet’ has the same etymology as pānus ‘spool wound with thread’ < Byzantine Greek πῆνος web (compare ancient Greek πηνίον spool, bobbin, πήνη thread on the bobbin, in Hellenistic Greek also spool, bobbin; of unknown origin). If not of the same origin, the etymology is unexplained.
Botany.
An inflorescence consisting of a loosely branching cluster of flowers, as in oats and many other grasses; (now) spec. a racemose (or occasionally cymose) compound inflorescence having a primary axis bearing branched secondary axes.
