Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin pānicum.
Etymology: < classical Latin pānicum panic n.1, adopted by Linnaeus ( Species Plantarum (1753) I. 55) and earlier botanists as the name of a genus.
Botany.
Any of numerous grasses of the genus Panicum, which includes European millet, P. miliaceum, and several other important cereals and fodder grasses; panic grass; (in form Panicum) the genus itself. Cf. panic n.1
