Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian panna cotta.
Etymology: < Italian panna cotta, literally ‘cooked cream’ < panna cream (1548 as pana ; < panno piece of cloth (used in dairying): see pane n.2) + cotta , feminine of cotto cooked (1290; < classical Latin coctus : see coct adj.).
An Italian dessert consisting of a rich solidified custard, often served with a caramel syrup.
