Etymology: < scientific Latin Palmellaceae, family name (J. Decaisne 1842, in Ann. des Sci. Nat.: Bot. 17 327, 333; < Palmella , genus name (see palmella n.) + -aceae : see -aceous suffix) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pælmelēⁱ·ʃəs) /pælmɛˈleɪʃəs/.

Botany. Obsolete. rare.

Belonging to the algae family Palmellaceae, of which the genus Palmella is the type (see palmella n. 1).The family is now usually identified with the family Tetrasporaceae (Wittrock 1872) and known by this name.
