Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Parnassia.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Parnassia (1694, Tournefort) < classical Latin Parnassus (see Parnassus n.) + -ia -ia suffix1, apparently so called on account of its similarity to a plant described by Dioscorides as growing on Mount Parnassus.
A genus of small damp-loving plants of the family Parnassiaceae (often included in Saxifragaceae), natives of temperate or cold regions of the northern hemisphere, which have solitary, usually white, prominently veined flowers and mostly radical ovate or cordate leaves; (also parnassia) a plant of this genus, esp. grass of Parnassus, P. palustris (see Parnassus n. 2).Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) I. 273.
