Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French palmitique.

Etymology: < French palmitique (E. Frémy 1840, in Ann. der Chem. u. Pharm. 36 45), apparently < palme palm n.¹ + -it- , arbitrary element + -ique -ic suffix, although perhaps compare palmite pith of the palm tree (see palmite n.).The expected formation, French palmique , had already been coined in a different sense (see palmic adj.). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pælmi·tik) /pælˈmɪtɪk/.
