Etymology: < American Spanish palo fierro (1641 as palo hierro in a text from Ecuador; also palo de fierro , palo de hierro ), literally ‘iron tree’, a name given to various trees or their wood < palo , specific sense of palo pale n.1 + fierro (Spanish hierro ) iron ( < classical Latin ferrum : see ferro- comb. form).

Any of various trees of desert regions in south-western North America with very hard, tough wood, esp. desert ironwood, Olneya tesota (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)). Also: the wood of such a tree.
