Origin: Of unknown origin.
Etymology: Origin unknown. Perhaps compare the (originally Polish) surname Paluka (Polish Pałuka).The word was popularized by the comic-strip character Joe Palooka, a well-meaning but clumsy prizefighter first drawn by Ham Fisher in 1920, but not regularly published in newspapers until the late 1920s or early 1930s. From the 1930s he was also the subject of a number of films and a television series.
