Etymology: < French palourde (1484 in Middle French; 13th cent. in Old French as palorde in an isolated attestation) < an unattested vulgar Latin alteration of classical Latin pelōrid- , pelōris a kind of mussel < Hellenistic Greek πελωριδ- , πελωρίς < ancient Greek πέλωρ monster, prodigy (see peloria n.) + -ίς -id suffix². Compare earlier palour n.

Esp. in French cookery: an edible carpet shell or Venus clam (genus Venerupis). Cf. pullet n. 3, purr n.⁴In quot. 1861 as a mass noun: the flesh of these molluscs as food.
