Etymology: < Panorama, the name for a large panoramic painting presented by the method described in sense 1a (invented by the painter Robert Barker (1739–1806) in 1787) < pan- comb. form + ancient Greek ὅραμα that which is seen, visible object, sight < ὁρᾶν to see (ultimately < the same Indo-European base as ware n.2) + -μα (see -oma comb. form). In his specification of patent 1787 (see quot. 1796 at sense 1a), Barker gave his invention the French name La nature à coup d'œil, literally ‘nature at a glance’.

a. A picture of a landscape or other scene, either arranged on the inside of a cylindrical surface, to be viewed from a central position (also called cyclorama), or unrolled or unfolded and made to pass before the spectator, so as to show the various parts in succession.
