Origin: Probably of multiple origins. A borrowing from Greek. Probably also partly a borrowing from Italian. Etymons: Greek πανσέληνος; Italian panseleno.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πανσέληνος the full moon, use as noun (short for ἡ πανσέληνος ὥρα ) of πανσέληνος (of the moon) at the full ( < παν- pan- comb. form + σελήνη moon: see selenites n.), probably via Italian panseleno (1598 in Florio). Compare post-classical Latin panselenos (frequently from c1000 in British sources).For earlier use of the Greek word in an English context compare:OE Byrhtferð Enchiridion (Ashm.) (1995) iii. ii. 148 Monoides he [sc. se mona] byð geciged prima, diatomos tyn nihta eald oððe fif and twentig, amphicirtos twelf nihta eald oððe feower and twentig, panselenos fiftyne.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
