Etymology: < post-classical Latin Paralipomenon (also Liber Paralipomenon ), the title in the Vulgate of the books of Chronicles in the Old Testament < Hellenistic Greek Παραλειπομένων , the title in the Septuagint of these books, use as noun (short for Παραλειπομένων βιβλία ) of genitive plural corresponding to ancient Greek παραλειπόμενα (things) left out, use as noun of neuter plural passive participle of παραλείπειν to leave on one side, omit < παρα- para- prefix1 + λείπειν to leave (see lipo- comb. form2). In sense 2 directly < ancient Greek παραλειπόμενα (see above). Compare Middle French, French Paralipomènes (c1375 as Paralipomenon ; end of the 17th cent. in sense 2).In form paralipomena < post-classical Latin Paralipomena < ancient Greek Παραλειπόμενα . In form paraleipomenon (see quot. 1887 at sense 2) representing ancient Greek παραλειπόμενον, neuter singular passive participle.
