Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paralipsis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin paralipsis rhetorical device of emphasising or drawing attention to something by professing to say little or nothing about it, or affecting to dismiss it (3rd cent.) < ancient Greek παράλειψις < παραλείπειν to leave on one side, pass by (see Paralipomenon n.) + -σις -sis suffix.
The rhetorical device of emphasizing or drawing attention to something by professing to say little or nothing about it, or affecting to dismiss it (usually with such phrases as not to mention, to say nothing of, etc.); an instance of this. Cf. preterition n. 1.
