1. U.S. A plant of the eastern United States, Cassia fasciculata (family Caesalpiniaceae ( Leguminosae)), which has showy yellow petals and leaflets which fold when the plant is under stress. Also called sensitive plant.

1866 J. Lindley & T. Moore Treasury Bot. I. 574/1 Heisteria coccinea..is a native..particularly of Martinique, where the French call it Bois perdrix, which is a corruption of Pois perdrix, signifying partridge pea, the fleshy red fruits forming a favourite food of pigeons and other birds.
