单词 beagle
释义

beaglen.

/ˈbiːɡ(ə)l/
Forms: Middle English–1500s begle, 1500s begele, bewgle, 1500s– beagle, 1600s beagell.
Etymology: Derivation obscure. The French bigle is recognized as borrowed < English The word can scarcely be of Old English origin, because of the hard g; in this position the g could not have escaped becoming palatalized. Possibly it is from French bégueule, < béer to gape, open wide + gueule throat. The Old French beegueulle, according to Godefroy, meant a noisy shouting person (crialleur); ‘open throat,’ in this sense, might be an epithet applied to a dog, though there is no evidence that it was so used in French.
1. A small variety of hound, tracking by scent, formerly used in hunting hares, but now superseded by the Harrier, which sometimes takes its name.
