Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish páramo.
Etymology: < Spanish páramo plateau (1142; 1535–57 with specific reference to South America) < classical Latin paramus (recorded in texts and inscriptions in Roman Iberia, modern day Spain and Portugal), further etymology uncertain (probably a loanword from a local language). Compare Portuguese paramo (16th cent.).
A high, treeless plateau in the tropical parts of South America.
