b. Esp. in parole of honour. A person's word of honour given or pledged; spec. (originally Military) a promise or undertaking given by a prisoner not to escape or, if released, to return to custody under specified conditions and (if a military prisoner) to refrain from combat for a stated period, usually for the duration of a war; a release in such circumstances.
