Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French paroli.
Etymology: < French paroli (1640) < Italian paroli , plural of parolo , probably < paro ‘I prepare’, 1st person singular of parare (see para- prefix2) + lo it. Compare Italian paroli ‘a grand part, set, or cast, at dice’ (Florio 1611), parolare ‘to set or play at a grand part at dice’ (Florio 1611), Italian regional (Naples) parulo the doubling of a previous stake. Compare parlay v., parlay n.
Cards (esp. Faro).
A cumulative bet in which the sum originally staked and the money won are left as a further stake; the gambling of double the sum that was previously staked. Also figurative. Cf. parlay n.
