Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Parramatta.
Etymology: < Parramatta, the name of a town in New South Wales, Australia.The cloth was originally produced by inmates of the women's prison at Parramatta. Later a similar fabric was manufactured in Britain at Bradford (see quot. 1946).
Now historical.
A coarse, light fabric with a weft of (originally combed merino) wool and a warp of silk or (later) cotton. Frequently attributive.
