Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian passamezzo.
Etymology: < Italian passamezzo (although this is first attested slightly later: 1585 as passamezo ), alteration (after passa- : see pass- comb. form) of †pass' e mezzo (1561; compare also †passo e mezo (1560)) < passo step, pace (a1276; < classical Latin passus : see pace n.1) + e and ( < classical Latin et ) + mezzo half (see mezzo adv.).
A slow dance of Italian origin in 2/4 time, related to the pavane; a piece of music for this.

1776 J. Hawkins Gen. Hist. Music IV. 386 As a Galliard consists of five paces or bars in the first strain, and is therefore called a Cinque Pace; the Passamezzo..has just half that number, and from that peculiarity takes its name.
