Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin paranētē; French paranete.
Etymology: < classical Latin paranētē the second highest note in certain tetrachords < ancient Greek παρανήτη (also in uncontracted form παρανεάτη ) the string below the nete < παρα- para- prefix1 + νήτη nete n.; originally via Middle French, French paranete (1572 in the passage translated in quot. 1603).Not fully naturalized in English.
Ancient Greek Music.
The second highest note of the higher of two tetrachords; (in the Greater and Lesser Perfect systems) the second highest note of the two highest tetrachords and of the highest tetrachord respectively. Hence occasionally: the seventh string (counting from the bottom) of an eight-stringed lyre (now rare).
