Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin paraferna.
Etymology: < classical Latin paraferna goods held by a wife over and above her dowry (2nd cent. a.d.; in post-classical Latin as parapherna (Justinian, 6th cent.)) < Hellenistic Greek παράϕερνα (neuter plural) < ancient Greek παρα- para- prefix1 + ϕερνή dowry < the base of ϕέρειν to bring (see bear v.1) + -νη-, suffix forming nouns.
1. Roman Law. Those articles of property held by a wife over and above the dowry she brought to her husband, and which remained under her own control. Cf. paraphernalia n. 1.
