Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish parrilla.
Etymology: < Spanish parrilla grill (1400), instrument of torture (1737 or earlier in plural), grill restaurant (1963 in Argentinian Spanish) < parra artificially supported vine (see park n.) + -illa -illa suffix, so called on account of resemblance to the shape of the trellis on which vines grow. Compare parrillada n.Not commonly used in Spanish to denote a dish (compare sense 2a), but attested in this sense in 1905 in an isolated example, probably as an extended use of the sense ‘grill’.
1. Now esp. in some Latin American countries: a structure resembling a metal grid used as an instrument of torture, to which the victim is secured to be electrocuted or (formerly) burned. Cf. gridiron n. 1b.
