Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Italian. Partly a borrowing from Spanish. Etymons: Italian parroco; Spanish párroco.
Etymology: Partly < Italian parroco (a1598), and partly < Spanish párroco (end of the 16th cent.), both < post-classical Latin parochus paroch n.The Italian and Spanish forms were probably influenced in form by the respective descendants of post-classical Latin parochia (see parish n.).
In Italian- and Spanish-speaking countries: a priest, esp. a parish priest.
