Etymology: < scientific Latin parapterum (J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) II. 170) < para- para- prefix¹ + ancient Greek πτερόν wing (see ptero- comb. form). Compare French paraptère (1868 in Littré).

Ornithology. Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.

A scapular or other long feather partly covering the wing.
