Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Parasaurolophus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Parasaurolophus, genus name (W. A. Parks: see quot. 1922) < para- para- prefix¹ + Saurolophus , name of a related genus (1912) < ancient Greek σαῦρος lizard (see -saurus comb. form) + λόϕος crest (see lopho- comb. form).

Palaeontology.

A genus of duck-billed hadrosaurid dinosaurs with small forelimbs and a distinctive, long, recurved crest; (also parasaurolophus) a dinosaur of this genus.

1922 W. A. Parks in Univ. Toronto Stud. Geol. Ser. No. 13. 5 Its affinities are undoubtedly with Saurolophus from the Edmonton; hence the proposed generic name, Parasaurolophus.

1959 R. C. Andrews All about Dinosaurs 73 Parasaurolophus..went even further. Its crest was very long and extended up and back over its head like a plume.

1996 Daily Tel. 6 Mar. 10/1 The team plans to use the 3-D skull model to simulate sounds that Parasaurolophus [might have] made with the four-and-a-half foot crest that rose from the back of its skull.
