Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin parascenium.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin parascenium (1673 or earlier) < ancient Greek παρασκήνιον one of the side-entrances to the stage, a side-scene ( < παρα- para- prefix1 + σκηνή scene n. + -ιον, neuter of -ιος, suffix forming adjectives). Compare French parascénium (1743–52 in Trévoux). N.E.D. (1904) enters this under parascene and gives the pronunciation as (pæ·răsīn) /ˈpærəsiːn/.
Classical History.
The part of an ancient Greek or Roman theatre on either side of the stage, in which props were stored and to which the actors retired. Cf. postscenium n.
